Pope John Paul II has called on Catholics to pray for "the conversion of hearts and a generous view in just decisions to resolve with adequate and peaceful means the contests that hamper the pilgrimage of humanity in our time."* He has invited us to "dedicate with special intensity this past  Ash Wednesday, to prayer and fasting for the cause of peace, especially in the Middle East."* 

 

The following resources are designed to help U.S. Catholics respond to this invitation from the Holy Father by praying, fasting, learning more, and acting, beginning with Sunday, March 2, 2003 and continuing through Lent and beyond.

and Occasions may be celebrated as a way of observing
those who have already died in the hostilities in the
Middle East.

Masses for Various Needs and Occasions

• For the Nation, (State), or City, For Those Who Serve in Public Office,

Intercessory Prayer

Prayers of intercession might include:

For the people of God

For our country, the President, the Congress, etc.

For those who die as a result of war

For all in the armed forces and all who protect and serve us

For an end to violence

For nations torn by violence and war

For victims of violence

For those who live in fear

For those who mourn the loss of loved ones

For those who have done violence

For our enemies

Parishes might consider using a sung "Kyrie Eleison" response
to the intercessory prayer.

Sample formats for the intercessions follow:

Reader:

For the strength not to suppress our sadness
but to overcome it by the hope that is in us, we pray:

For the confidence to know that God has the power
to change our sadness into joy, we pray:

For words that will console those
who are overwhelmed by sorrow or fear, we pray:

For the courage to sow in tears
until we can gather in joy, we pray:

For the strength to overcome
feelings of retaliation or revenge, we pray:

For true justice for those who are responsible
for today’s (this week’s) tragedy, we pray:

For those who have died and those who
mourn them, we pray:

A model based upon the Beatitudes, e.g.:

Reader: Blessed are the poor in spirit,

All: The Reign of God is theirs.

These resources may also be used in planning a liturgical prayer
service other than Eucharist. Schools, religious education programs,
youth groups, parish commissions and committees

Environment and Art Notes

An appropriate place for the American Flag would be near the
main entrance of the church next to a stand holding a book in which
parishioners can write their prayer intentions.
The space might be further decorated with flowers and candles.

Other Notes and Considerations

For any parish liturgical celebration, every effort should be made
to ensure a full compliment of ministers. Readers, a cross bearer,
servers, cantors and other musical ministers, ushers
and greeters should all be considered in planning the liturgies.

El lugar apropiado para la Bandera Americana sería a la entrada principal
del templo y cerca del libro donde los miembros de la parroquia pueden
escribir sus propias intenciones y peticiones. Unas flores y/o plantas
ayudarían a la dignificación y ambientación del lugar.

Otra recomendación.

En la planificación de cualquier celebración litúrgica parroquial,

Hymn: "Christ, Be Our Light" (B. Farrell, OCP)
              or other appropriate song (if there is no music
              leader available, the following are songs that
              can be sung well without accompaniment or
              song leader and can be found in most hymnals:
              "Amazing Grace" (traditional),
              "Jesus, Remember Me" (Berthier),
              "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say" (Bonar),

Incense, Paschal Candle, and Lectionary are processed
in and placed in the sanctuary. Other candles in the
sanctuary may be lit from the Paschal Candle

All sit, or remain standing, if the readingis from one of the
Gospels; a Gospel Acclamation may be sung if needed.

Reading: One of the following readings, or other
                 appropriate Scripture readings, may be proclaimed:

• Isaiah 57: 15-19 (Peace to the far and the near.)

• Micah 4:1-4 (They shall beat their swords into plowshares.)

• Colossians 3:12-15 (Christ's peace must reign in your hearts.)

• Ephesians 4: 30-5:2 (Get rid of all bitterness and anger.)

• Matthew 5:1-12 (How blest are the poor in spirit.)

• Matthew 5:38-48 (Love your enemies.)

Response to the Word

A period of silence may be observed after the reading,
or a homily may be given, or a suitable song may be sung.
Other appropriate texts on peace, for example
from the US Bishops (USCCB Web Site) or other contemporary
readings, may also be shared.

A setting of the Magnificat is sung by the assembly.  If no music

Presider: In this time of war,
                 we beg our God to deliver us from evil
                 and grant us peace in our day.

Intercessionist: Our response is "Gracious God, deliver us."

• From the curse of war and the human sin that causes war, we pray....

• From pride and unbelief that turns its back on God, we pray....

• From national vanity that poses as patriotism, from loud-mouthed boasting and blind self-worship that admit no guilt, we pray....

• From the self-righteous that will not compromise, and from selfishness that gains by the oppression of others, we pray....

• From the lust for money or power that drives people to kill, we pray....

• From trusting in the weapons of war, and mistrusting the councils of peace, we pray....

• From hearing, believing, and speaking lies about other nations, we pray....

• From groundless suspicions and fears that stand in the way of reconciliation, we pray....

• From words and deeds that encourage discord, prejudice, and hatred; from everything that prevents the human family from fulfilling God's promise of peace, we pray....

A moment of silence is shared before continuing.

Intercessionist: Our response is "Give peace in our time, O Lord."

  de la reconciliación, oremos.
• Por las palabras y los hechos que animan la discordia,
   los prejuicios, y el odio, por todo lo que interfiere en la
   familia humana que impide cumplir con la promesa
   de paz de Dios, oremos.

• Por el pueblo de Estados Unidos, oremos.
• Por el pueblo de Irak, oremos.
• Por todos los niños del mundo, oremos.
• Por aquellos que están en el servicio militar, oremos.
• Por aquellos que van a la lucha, oremos.
• Por las Naciones Unidas, oremos.
• Por las federaciones laborales, las industrias, y el comercio,
   oremos.
• Por los departamentos de estado, embajadores, diplomáticos,
   y los líderes mundiales, oremos.
• Por las agencias mundiales de misericordia, las cuales vendan
   las heridas, dan de comer al hambriento, oremos.
• Por todos aquellos que en una u otra forma trabajan para
   mantener la paz y el bien común, oremos.
• Por todas las personas en cualquier parte del mundo que
   viven aterrados y con miedo, oremos.

Padre Nuestro:

Presidente: El amor de Dios ha sido derramado en nuestros
                       corazones con el Espíritu Santo que se nos ha dado;
                       digamos con fe y esperanza: Padre Nuestro….

Oración:

Presidente: 

Dios no solo de la paz,
sino la paz misma,
a quien no puede comprender quien siembra la discordia,
no aceptar quien ama la violencia,
concede a quienes trabajan por la paz
perseverar en su propósito y a quienes la obstaculizan,
olvidarse del odio.
Por nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Amen.

Conclusión:

Si preside un presbítero o un diacono, bendice al pueblo
como sigue:

Presidente: El Señor este con ustedes.  Y con tu espíritu.
                       La bendición de Dios, todopoderoso, Padre, Hijo +
                       y Espíritu Santo, descienda sobre ustedes. Amen.

Otra forma de bendición puede ser usada, como en la Misa.

En una celebración presidida por un misterio no ordenado, se dice:

Presidente: El Señor nos bendiga,
                       nos guarde de todo mal
                       y nos lleve a la vida eterna.  Amen.

                       Pueden ir en paz.  Demos gracias a Dios.
